"There are no active mixer devices available. To install mixer devices, go to Control Panel, click Printers and Other Hardware, and then click Add Hardware."
I have Windows XP
To be brutally honest I'm not sure which kind of Sound Card i have installed either but I know it will be an old one.
Assistance would be much appreciated.
Cheers

Welcome to Windrivers ScottishGuy
First we need some info... is your computer branded... like a dell or hp or packard bell or something? If so, what make and model?
If not, do you know if the sound is integral to the motherboard or is a separate card?

Hi mate, thanks for your reply.
This computer is not branded no. I can't be 100% whether its a seperate card or integral to the motherboard, is their a quick way to find out rather than me getting the screwdrivers out again :)

Hi, thanks for your reply.
My pc is not Branded.
I cant be 100% sure but i think the sound is most likely built into the motherboard.

Ok so I need to know the make and model of the motherboard...
Go to http://www.belarc.com/
Click on Free Download in the middle top of the page.
Run the program and it will give you a report
Post the top part (I don't need to see your windows updates) in the next post please.

We find that if people have asked for help then telling them to google is not constructive. Please think when you answer a post, "could I follow these instructions if I had no idea what to do?"
Googling everest doesn't tell Scottish Guy anything about everest, where to get it from, what it will do for him or how to use it... although I have to admit, the thought of dumping everest (the mountain) on top of a malfunctioning machine is funny!

OK, you have one of those infuriating boards that doesn't give who made it... however that is enough info to find the most likely driver here (http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=420&OSID=1&CatID=1010&SubCatID=104)
Click on the box that says click here to begin free download (otherwise you will be clicking sponsored links)
Download it, unzip it (extract files) and then run the setup.exe and restart your computer when asked. Let me know how it goes.

I don't know if this is a sound card problem or not. My monitor has the built in speaker. a few months ago the speakers stopped working. I have speakers plugged into the back of my tower right now that work fine. But I would love to have the monitor speakers work. Any suggestions???
monitor is a Westinghouse, model #LCM-17v8 (not the one that came with computer. One that came with computer is broke too. I'll have to find a different thread for questions on that lol)

Many of these monitors have the sound controlled by the monitor menu itself. You may have inadvertently muted it or turned it down.
In addition this monitor does dvi or vga and the sound setups can be quite different depending on which input you are using.
the user manual is here (http://www.westinghousedigital.com/pdf/25_User_Manual.pdf) Check the settings you have.

Thanks for your help NooNoo. But everything seems to be set up correctly. I have 3 modes on this monitor, Economy, Text and Picture mode. When it is set on picture mode everything seems fine with the screen but on economy and text mode I get feedback and lines...sound doesn't work at all still. I might have to save some money and just get another monitor. I haven't had the best luck when it comes to monitors. The one that came with the computer has a problem...black screen. like a bulb is burnt out. Again, thanks for your help.

The modes only affect the brightness of the screen, they shouldn't be affecting the sound. I would phone Westinghouse, there is a number at the back of the manual I linked.
