function driver not found

Hi,

I plugged a USB storage deviceto the computer, on the computer
motherboard bios, it detect the USB device as a USB mass storage. when
the computer boot up to windows 2000 with service pack 4, win2000 found
the usb device, and try to install a driver for this device.
but an error occurred during the installation of the device: The
installation failed becasue a function driver was not specified for
this device instance.

Any idea and how can I fix the problem?

What are you plugging in? Many items will show up as a mass storage device (some cell phones, thumb drives, portable hard drives, iPods, PDAs, etc..).

I'm assuming some sort of portable hard drive or thumb drive? They usually have the drivers on them but if its not working, look for the drivers on the manufacturer's web site.

If you got up the driver installation request, did you also see a warning about unsigned drivers?

I usually see this problem when the computer and /or the usb drive has had a problem with a virus or spyware.
Remove the USB device
Delete infcache.1 from c:\winnt\inf
Restart the machine, wait until it gets right to desktop (no eggtimer) then plug in the usb device again.

PS. this problem showed up after i'd formatted the harddisk and installed win2000 again. Before that the USB port worked excelent.

Did you install the motherboard chipset drivers after you re-installed Windows? If not, Win2k may not be able to correctly handle on-board features like USB. In this situation installing the drivers may be what's needed to get a USB device operating correctly.

I have two usb ports in the back , and two port in the front of the computer.
The two ports in the back work perfect
The two in the front cause the problem

The two in back are probably standard USB 1.1 ports, the others probably enhanced USB2 ports. Win2k operates separate driver stacks for USB1.1 and USB2, and in the absence of the correct motherboard chipset support, may not operate the USB2 properly. Have you installed the appropriate motherboard chipset drivers for the new Windows installation?
