hi

i have a compac armada 1700 6233/t/4000/d/m/1. w/windows 98.

I tryed to put xp home in it and all the fun started. First it started to say hal.dll corupted, so i tryed a few things and nothing. So, second i put the HD in another laptop and used dos to format the c: drive.

now it says error reading operating system.

Tryed using 98 boot disk but then it goes back to Hal.dll corupted.

I don't have windows 98 so I tryed to load windows XP Home

Am I F'meowed or can this be repaired. I think it's just software and not any of the hardware is fryed.

XP is NOT going to like that comp if the max Ram is only 160 MB (32+128 as per specs).

As far as the HAL goes, you can try to force a 'Standard PC' Hal using the technique described were;

I agree with CCT, in fact I would say nothing will get XP to run on that correctly.
Your specs are completely below anything XP could run on.
Windows 98 is likely the only option. You need to ebay for a win 98 cd.
