I am new to this website. I have a HD crash, cpu reading on startup " a disk read error occured" with noise at the HD. I have no CD's with this laptop I bought last year on ebay. I only care about the msoffice onthe HD. Used mainly for internet. I have bought a HD but am now faced with the install and not sure how to get the info needed to use it. It runs windows 98/2000. I can get to the setup untilities menu but have no idea how to use this menu. Please help me. I need a recovery disk?:eek::confused:

Hello:
It sounds like your HD has physical failure by what you report.
However, you could try creating a Windows 98 Boot Disk http://www.computerhope.com/boot.htm and then trying to 'fix' the HD (chkdsk, etc).
Getting software off of that drive is another issue - unless the whole install cd was copied there OR you had made an image of that drive beforehand, you won't be able to do that AFAIK.

I decided to just start over and reinstall a new versio of MS. I am however wondering if there is any way to download free online for any versio of 98 to vista. I have xp on my main cpu. Could I copy it fro there

'wondering if there is any way to download free online for any versio of 98 to vista'
Nope!
'I have xp on my main cpu. Could I copy it fro there'
Nope! Well, physically you could probably get a copy off but since you don't have a Certificate of Authenticity for that on the other computer and thus don't have a separate key code you couldn't get it to work longer than 30 days.
