Hewlett Packard was sent in for repair, came back with scratchy sound or crackles or no sound at all in some programs. I have checked for conflicts, have checked sound card settings, volume control etc. Have also checked for altered/deleted files with none found. Speakers are fine also. I've checked directx with no problems found there...but DID encounter a problem when testing direct sound, as no sound was heard. When I tested direct music, I could hear music at a very very low volume.
Any clues?
At times, a low volume of sound can be heard for a very short period of time following re boot.

Have someone check card itself for a " cold solder joint "
thats where one of the solder connections is making intermittant contact
after it heats up it will usually strt working better but when cold it can make things sound scratchy
this could have happened during shipment
hope this helps

Thanks for responding; but, if that was the case, then why does the sound work for a little while when FIRST booting up? After a little while, the sound is lost again.
This is in re to my mom's PC, and she lives about 2000 miles from me, so I can't even look at it. She has a Riptide sound card, and when we checked, it seems to be assigned to the sam IRQ as the modem is. Now, I'm just trying to figure out if we ought to look for an upgrade to the driver, or re assign it to another IRQ, or try to just re install it period. This is the THIRD PC she's been through in a year's time, if that tells you anything...LOL. Again, thanks.
