Sound Problem

OK, Ever since I formated my computer and re-installed everthing (i had Win95 now Win98) my sound ...well... my media sounds such as my MP3 and CD Audio is of poor quality but my WAV sound is Okay. I know my sound card is up to scratch as the audio was fine before. I have tried everything to diagnose the promblem but now im at a loose end. What is wrong? Can anyone help?

for poor CD-quality, is the CD damaged in any way? Check the audio lead from your CD-ROM to the soundcard, it may be a little loose or you could try re-routing it away from any power cables or fans. (quite un-likely though).
How poor is the quality? Clicks, skips, background noise? What are you using to play back the sounds?
