When I try to verify the 3D sound with 2 (stereo) speakers I get an error message stating I need DirectX 5 or higher. Well... to the best of my knowledge '8' is higher than '5'! The same thing happens for headphones and 4 (quad) speakers. However, if I try to configure in 4 speakers I get sound during the Front Test.
I've also tried adjusting the acceleration rate in DirectX 8 (Full, Standard, Basic). The 3D test works fine here.
I get the blue screen of death when trying to start up SimCopter, SimTower etc... as well as when I use Norton Utilities to test the sound.
I've even tried to reinstall SB drivers several times from my HP recovery disk and updates to no avail.
Is there a solution - other than buying a new sound card?

The first thing I would try is to update your Audio Card, and Main Board drivers.Usually when you see that blue screen it is driver related crash. Have you done the diagnostic test for directx?? Go to start, then run...type DXDIAG and run the test by choosing the sound tab at the top...look in the notes section to be sure the drivers are certified...if they are not , try to locate and download certified ones.
