can't change display above 480x640

I just bought a used HP vectraVLseries 8 pc and when i installed my monitor the only colors I get are 2 or 16 and 640x480 . I think the maker is MGA what is the problem here?

You didn't mention which version of Windows you're using...
Go here for <a href="http://www.support.vectra.hp.com/vectrasupport/indexes/Driver182.html" target="_blank">drivers for your HP Vectra</a>. Also, notice the links there for FAQ's, Manuals, etc. Several User's Guides are available.
Also, there is a BIOS upgrade available...
