Dual booting and framerates

I know this may sound strange, but I think dual booting causes a performance loss in some games, e.g.- UT. Here's the story.

I love playing UT but my framerate was crap. I was getting 30 fps MAX on 800x600 @ 32bpp and I don't have that bad of a computer. Anyway, nothing I tried would fix the problem. Nothing. Then my OS got fubar'd (I had 2000 and 98 SE at the time) and I decided to go back to plain old 2000. So I went through the motions and reloaded it. I installed all my drivers, then loaded up UT because I was having withdrawls. :D Lo-and-behold, I was getting 45 fps AVG at 1024x768 @ 32bpp and 55 fps at 800x600.

The only thing I can think of is that dual booting some how causes a rather hefty performance loss. Of course, it may simply be my combination of hardware. Anybody have any thoughts?

I don't believe that the dual boot would have affected performance. The only way it would have been possible is if you put your 2k pageing file on the 98 partition. What i think hppened is that you had issues with your windows and reinstalling it cleared out those issues.

I didn't have different partitions for my separate OSs, I just installed 98, then did a dual-boot install of 2000. Could that be considered putting the 2000 paging file on the 98 partition?

That will be the problem then as both 2K & 98 will share directories (i.e. the Program Files folder and some of it's sub-folders) including the Direct X folder. If the 2K version of Direct X has overwritten some of the 98 version files then this will almost definatly slow the system down.

Good God. I didn't even think of that. I try to make sure that nothing in 2K kills anything in 98, e.g.-Internet Explorer and Outlook Express, but that never occured to me... Looks like I'll be using TweakUI to change the Program Files directory to something else if I set my comp to dual-boot again.

If IE & OE worked fine on both 98 & 2k when installed on the same partition then you are very lucky, as it is these & Windows Media Player that are the first programs to cause problems.

Also, the only way I was able to keep IE, OE, and WMP from conflicting was to install IE to a different folder in 98 and not install OE or WMP (in 98).
