did it come with the pc? Is the pc a custom build or retail? No letter or numbers on the chips?

Yeah it was a custom built... My wife had it when we got together and she assured me that all the drivers were there ::groan:: I will check the card again to see if there are any numbers on the chips...

Which O/S are you using? Win98, Win98 SE, Win Me or Win XP? Actually if it is any one of those you can check through the Device Manager. Right Click on My Computer>>>Choose Properties>>>from there into System Properties and then Device Manager. You can also access System Properties through Control Panel. In Device Manger select Display Adapter and your Video Card Info will be there. From there you can also check the driver info. Good Luck! :)

Another way to find out what the card is called is by going into the display properties. Right click on the Desktop and choose "Properties". In the new window that pops up, choose the "Settings" tab at the top of the window. About half way down the page, the window should say "Display:". The monitor followed by the video card should be displayed.

the OS is Win98... and what i get when going into settings is... Standard PCI Graphics adapter and an unknown monitor... the main problem I am having is I can't change the color rate except to 2 from 16 and my screen area of 640 X 480...

You can try to Change the Monitor to an actual ID. Go to Display Properties/Settings/Advanced/Monitor/Change...Select your actual Manufacturer and model number...hopefully, you will find something comparable. It might bring up the rest of your resolution settings.
But my guess is that the Standard PCI Graphics Device Adapter is the culprit. Without knowing the manufacturer, you can try to let WinDoze reload the drivers it chooses...which is probably how it came up the Standard in the first place. Do this by booting into Safe Mode and removing the Standard and all devices attached. Reboot and let WinDoze reload all of the drivers. It might help if you have the .CAB files handy on your hard drive or you might need to have your Win98 CD with you. Check this out before deleting any devices!
Just a couple of suggestions...keep at it and let us know how it ends up. Good Luck!

Check the biggest chip on the card for some identifiable markings, logos, numbers, whatever.
also, do you know if it is PCI or AGP? It is really only the chip that needs to be identfied. Post back with anything about the chip on the video card and it would help, also knowing if it is PCI or AGP would give an approximation of how old it is, that'll help too.

Okay more info... I tried changing the monitor and nadda... thanks for the try on that one... okay now for more info on the card its self.. I belive it is agp the slot that goes into the motherboard is about 4 inches long... and the slot on the motherboard is brown (dont know if it helps but the slots seem to be colored in my MB. the biggest chip on the board has no markings at all... (not sure its a chip at all) its a 1" square that has slots on the top and a hole running lenght wise through the chip. so I went to the next chip that looked like a winner.. it was set inside a brown bordered chipholder (sorry dont know the tech name) there was a sticker on it with V2.1B.25 under the sticker was this...
Windbond
W27E010D-70
291310401
921GEVD

and there were four chips of the same size (I think its the cards memory)

I hope this helps.. and thanks everyone for your help!

Above i said it was AGP but my comp detects it at PCI could WIN98 make that mistake???

Are you using Win98? Or Win98SE? Win98 is a pretty old version and needs lots and lots of driver updates etc. from http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com. I know it will be pure torture, but go there and download all the updates you can. Then remove the video driver from "System Properties" and reboot. The updated Windows might just be able to redect the card and install the appropriate driver. One of a couple things could happen after the reboot if all goes according to plan:

1) The correct driver will be installed,.. end of story.
2) The correct driver will be installed, but it will still only be set to 16 color at 640x480. If this happens, try to set it to 256 color (if available) then reboot again. Once you're back in, set it to 16 bit or 32 bit and click ok. Then set it to 800x600. Then reboot again and all should be good.

*Note: You won't be able to install the monitor driver until the correct video driver is installed. So get the video fixed first. Also, I'm too lazy to go searching for the drivers based on the numbers you provided, so hopefully someone else will post them. :D

Printed somewhere on the card will be an FCC Reg or FCC ID - it may even be on a label. If you could find that, we can at least find the manufacturer of the card!

Yes if the card goes in the brown slot on the motherboard it is an AGP.

The other thing to look for is, when the computer boots, the very first thing displayed on the screen is the video details, then it goes to the award or phoenix or ami bios details. Its there for only a couple of seconds, if you are lucky the pause break key will pause the boot for you and you can make a note of the information, if not, keep rebooting till you get it!!

Finally all cards that win98 cannot identify are loaded as standard pci adapters, pay no mind to that.
