I have and old Gateway Destination monitor which I purchased in 1996. I would like to know how to change the settings in display properties so I can set the monitor to a resolution that is higher than 640 x 480. I know it can be done because I have done it in the past. Can anyone help out with this??

This actually has nothing to do with your monitor. To change the display resolution, go to Start, Settings, Control Panel, Display, click on the settings tab, and here you can crank up the resolution. After changing the resolution, you should also change the refresh rate by clicking on the advanced button under the resolution setting.

already tried that - resolution stays at 640 x 480 and won't go any higher. I have worked with other systems and know how to change the resolution. This one doesn't - I just installed a new video card Geoforce2 MX400 - The old one let me at least go up to 800 x 600 - I was happy with that so I didn't try to 'fix' the problem The highest resolution the original video card, an STB video card, would let me change the resolution to was something strange like 400 x 720 but I could change that by changing the monitor setting in display properties. Changing the monitor setting allowed me to change the resolution as high as I wanted - I have tried "adapter default" and that doesn't work. Tried letting Windows decide and that doesn't work either. I know this sounds strange - but that is how I have worked around it in the past - could it have something to do with the new video card?

looks like it is an issue with the video card - Geforce2 mx400 - I am running Windows Me (upgrade from 98) - AMD Duron Processor 950
on a First Mainboard - I will check back for any ideas - going to head for the Gainward site to see what they have to say about it

this will be my last post on this subject.
After much research, uninstalling and etc. and then plugging the system into a Desktop monitor I have found out that the problem is indeed with the monitor not the GeForce card. The card works perfectly with the Desktop monitor. I hooked it back up to the older 31" Destination monitor and got stuck in 640x480 resolution again. With some cards there is a work around for this but not with the GeForce.
thanks for your helpful suggestion
