Question about agpX1 and x2

I've got a somewhat ageing board that i'm ressurecting. It's got an agp x1 slot and was wondering if i can use an agp x2 card in it??

from what I understand it shouldn't be a problem at all. The card will just run at AGP1x

What was said is true, just make sure that you are not speaking of AGP 1.0 and 2.0, in which there is a difference in voltage

Just tried an ati xpert 2000 pro card in the slot and got zero boot must be the voltage problem.
I need to get themachine to a standard whereby dvd playback will be a possibility.
Can you reccomend a card that will work with the mobo, one with dvd sorry mpeg decoding support.
The motherboard is an elite group pp5vp +.

There is a difference between the terms 1x and 1.0, 1x is the speed at which it operates. 1.0 is teh standard that it uses. 1.0 and 2.0 use dif voltage and are usually keyed different..but not always. 1x 2x and 4x and 8x are just the speeds that it operates and should make no difference in the actually operation other than speed.

If you are looking to mainly get DVD playback out of it, pick up a PCI ATI XPert128. This card is available for around $50 and has 16MB of RAM. It isn't great for any kind of 3D application but has decent 2D and was just about king of DVD playback during it's time.

You might try a Matrox G400 (if you can find one) or G450. I used to use a 16MB G400 OEM-type on my system, and the DVD playback was pretty good (plus the usual excellent Matrox image quality).
I upgraded to a 32MB Voodoo IV card for gaming; the DVD playback (with PowerDVD XP 4.0) is excellent and this is the only 32MB card to be compatible with my socket-7 mobo with AGP 1.0 slot.
Hope this gives you a couple of options. :)

I've found any ATI card will do the trick, Rage 128 went out with all my machines unless otherwise stated did the job too :D

As previously stated there are 1x,2x & 4x speed agp cards there is also AGP 1.0 & AGP 2.0.

The difference between AGP 1.0 & 2.0 (not in speed terms) is a physically larger AGP slot & card with extra connectors, usually there is a jumper on an agp 2.0 board to allow any voltage adjustment as necessary. My m/b has a little sticker over the un-needed bit of the agp slot saying 'Warning! Set voltage correcly for AGP 2.0....blah-blah.....danger of explosion!'

BTW I have socket 7 machines with PCI cards that can do DVD playback so with an AGP card (whatever spec) it ought to be easy-peasy <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" /> :rolleyes: :D :p
