bit of a monitor/video card problem...

Hello. I'm currently working on a friend's computer, which has a problem: unless it's an icon, everything is shown in only 16 colours. I've tried everyting: change video mode, change drivers, etc. with no avail. What can be the problem?

can u supply more info please , it sounds as if u have not got the correct video drivers for the card.

is it a mfg machine ie HP compac etc , or is it one that has been built by a local shop etc, is it an onboard video or a seperate vid card ? also to help please state what operating system u are using ,,,and has this just happened or a: have u installed a programme or B: have u just reinstalled windows?

I to have the same predicament. I am at the moment re-installing Windows 98 Second Edition for a friend. Since re-formatting, the drivers for the Modem, Audio Card and Video have been lost. I have found the driver for the Modem card. Yet to no avail cannot locate the drivers for the audio/video card - due to them not being separate card(s). They seem to be intergrated into the mother board. No serial number(s), no information what so ever. What can I and he do? Please assist.

Have you opened up the computer to see what kind of mobo you have?

If you can get that information, we can help better.

Like freddy said, is this an HP compaq or did someone else build this machine.

Please assist. </font><hr /></blockquote><font size="2" face="Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">well I would go to <a href="http://www.hwinfo.com" target="_blank">hwinfo</a> and download the program. it will tell you what kind of video and sound card you have. you then should be able to go to the manufacturers page and download the appropriate drivers. since their integrated on the mobo, you can also look up the mobo info using that program and go to the mobo manufacturers page and download the drivers. if you have any problems, post the results and someone will help you.

well combi boards are real horrors - hwinfo is probably your best bet, more info is really required.

i seem to be having the same problem...i formatted my pals hard drive...but neglected to take down the necessary info on graphics card, monitor etc...when we installed win 98 all loaded well but it installed standard monitor...found out what monitor was but couldn't find driver for it...then found out graphics card was installed in combi motherboard...now monitor only displays in either 2 or 16 bit...what can i do to sort this out...i feel a right idiot...i though i was doing him a favour which he says i have as pc is now working but whats the point of that when he cant view anything in anything that 16 bit...none of his photo packages work now!

OK Whizzo you need to find out what the motherboard is. There are a number of ways if the computer is branded (eg compaq, gateway packard etc) You should be able to download the driver for it from the website... all you need to know is the model number (in theory), otherwise:

1. Open up the case and look on the board for a model number

2. Boot the machine and hit the pause/break key while its counting ram. On the screen will be a very long string of numbers and letters, usually starting with a date. Write this number down (carefully) and post it here, someone will look it up for you or do it yourself at <a href="http://www.wimsbios.com" target="_blank">www.wimsbios.com</a>

3. Get hwinfo as shown in previous messages, or go to <a href="http://www.belarc.com" target="_blank">www.belarc.com</a> and download the personal audit. Both of these methods should be able to identify the motherboard in most cases.

As soon has you have found out the make and model of the motherboard, you can go to their website and download the correct drivers.

You also have the option of finding out what graphic chip is running on the motherboard and downloading the standard (reference) driver for it... this usually works, but not always.

If you get stuck or cannot find the drivers, post again with as much information as you have got and we will try to help.

ok i found some info for you...my friend could only find this out from side of machine...hope it helps a little...? Advent PPGA Celeron Intel 810 AGP Set GW-9WMM7/6WMM7-1 If this is no good then i will go round tomorrow and look for numbers on mother board...and try what you told me?

ugh, pcworld oem no support except on a premium rate number... he probably has the 810 onboard graphics and sound and stuff
