I have tried to install this card into a machine running Windows NT 4.0 server. After I install the drivers and restart the server. Windows reports it as a standard VGA adapter and wil only run in 640 x 480 x 16 colours. I have tried earlier revisions of drivers and have tried uninstalling the drivers via the add/remove programs option and then re-installing the drivers with no success. I have also tried following the instructions in MS Knowledgebase article Q157251 with no success. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Couple of questions, when your machine boots, does the very first screen report what video card it is? (Before the screen where it counts the ram).

If you remove the driver and redetect, does it correctly report what video card it is?

In the bios, is irq for vga enabled?

Have you tried this card in another machine?

What was the previous card?

Thank you for your reply, sorry It took so long for me to respond.

In answer to your questions
1. Yes. That's about all it does right. I have verified that the monitor is plugged into the new card instead of the old onboard one. Also I have verified with the manufacturer of the server (Compaq) that the onboard video card is bypassed when an aternate video adapter is installed.

2. No. It still reports as a standard VGA Adapter

3. Not sure. I can check this out tonight (The machine it's in is a server, so I had to schedule some down time for it)

4. No. I'm powering off the server tonight for this reason.

5. The previous card was an ATI Rage card.

There are some other things I have found out in the mean time. The powervr device (The device driver for the video card) listed under devices in the control panel isn't started, if you try to start it manually you get an error 0031: A device attached to the system is not functioning. Also, there doesn't appear to be an entry for the new card in the registry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\DEVICEMAP\VIDEO.

Again, thanks for the reply. Any help you give is greatly appreciated.

Mmmm are you sure you have removed the 'old' cards drivers properly? ATI drivers can leave a bit of a hangover.....

I believe there is a 'system clean' tool from ATI which ought to remove all reference to the old drivers, give this a shot first.

If not - all NT 4 service packs on?

I know this is a little off the point but have you tried getting both old & new working together? My point here is, that if there are any reg entries or mis-directed services going on then you have more chance of diagnosing it if you can see what applies to old & what applies to new etc.....
