In short - You can't. aka there isn't an upgrade path that will save your apps etc...
You could add another drive and purchase win 7 and dual boot.... Or wipe the current drive and install 7.
I have upgraded an Acer laptop from XP to Vista, then upgraded Vista to 7. PITA but it did work. "It" meaning Windows worked okay. Many of the little programs that worked on XP no longer worked on 7 however. Microsoft's PowerToys are one example.
Was given the Key code for Window 7 when the computer was bought. But was not given a Win 7 CD just an XP CD from Dell. Can I download Win 7 from Dell with the Key Code?
Possibly.
Here are Microsoft's various Windows ISO download pages:
Windows 7 - Download Windows 7 Disc Images (ISO Files)
Windows 8/8.1 - Upgrade Windows with only a product key
Windows 10 - Download Windows 10

I tried the Win 7 but gave me an error telling me it could download Win 7 due to it was installed by Manufacturer..
I'm doing this crazy thing due to Turbo Tax will not support XP..I was able to install Turbo Tax, but was getting errors while using it..
Guess those Windows 7 downloads need a Retail, instead of OEM Product Key then.
Amazon.com has "Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64bit, System Builder OEM DVD 1 Pack (For Refurbished PC Installation)" for as low as $54.96 right now, (with free shipping for Prime Members)
Dell will mail you a Win 7 dvd for the price of shipping.
There you go, even better. Thanks Steve.
Thanks everyone..I will check out Dell
Hey Dr...
I always get confused with the 32 bits & 64 bits. How can I tell if my computer has what.
Press [Winkey][Pause], (or click Start, right-click Computer and select Properties), and to the right of "System type:" it'll tell you whether it's a 32-bit or 64-bit of Windows.
You would think that was the spot. But not on my computer..but with more investigation I saw a string that said System32..
Are you using Windows 7?
Something else you can try is to click Start, type in msinfo32 and press [Enter]. In the right pane, to the right of "System type:" mine says "x64-based PC".
No I'm not using Win 7..I want to and have a Key code but no DVD..I'm using XPpro
When I typed in msinfo32..I got a list of items..under system type it says" X86-based PC"
