Odd MS Communicator Question

Heya folks,

I've got a client working on our corporate LAN who uses two machines with a KVM. We use MS Communicator 1.0.559.206. The problem she's having is that when she receives an IM it only goes to one of her machines.

She can send/receive from either, but when an IM is sent to her, it always goes to machine #1. If she sends an IM from machine #2, she can send/receive with no problems.

I've tried to duplicate the problem in our shop, but can't, when an IM is sent to me and I'm logged onto two machines, the IM is sent to both.

Her machines and the ones here in the shop are all using the same subnet.

Anyone have any insights into this?

Have you checked her preference settings? and her permissions

Yup, both machines are using a standardized image, she doesn't have admin rights on either, and both are using the same version and settings for Communicator.

Hello - since this post has been sitting for four days I thought I might ask a couple things about this - don't take offense.

If the two computers hooked to the KVM are part of the network, does that mean each has a connection to a server/router OR is one connected to the other (mini-network) and that one is connected to the server/router ?

If an IM was to be received by two computers simultaneously, wouldn't they both have to have the same (IP) address ?

No offense taken, those're relevant questions.

The machines each have their own connection to our LAN (which is domain based).

All machines onsite (with a few rare exceptions) use dynamic IP addresses.

I verified in our shop (which uses the same domain as the two problem machines) that I could have an IM sent to me, and receive it simultaneously on two seperate machines.

Just got back from another out of stater, so maybe I'll have time to take a look at this today.

My confusion, which occurs often, in this regard is that if an IM is sent to an individual you wouldn't want it received by every comp and user on the network. Or do they work that way ?

If not, then addressing would have to be User-specific somehow, like e-mail.

Thanks, and to clarify, MS Communicator (part of the Office '03 pack) sends IMs to specific email addresses. I think you're thinking of something like netsend, which can send network-wide messages.

So, if the recipients' IM/Email address is the same on both computers the recipient should be a recipient!
