My thoughts exactly. Chalk up a vote in support of AlienDyne's judgement.
Will the Asus or Abit take a pentium or an athlon?
What sort of Ram etc do they take.?
1. It depends from the model.
They both make motherboards for Intel and AMD.
2. It also depends from the model.
I would check their products on their websites if I were you.
Keep in mind that these two is an excellent choice, but expensive.
ECS! BEST DAMN MOTHERBOARD MAKER IN THE WORLD!! Especially the PCChips based Boards!! I love em!! They work wonders!! Miracles!! Mirages!! Menage et Tois!!!!
OK heres my two cents worth, I just bought the Asus cuv266, this board supports the Intel CPUs and DDR ram
Do you want to build an Intel based system or an AMD based system
I would go with the DDR memory since it is double the speed of sdram and it is cheaper than rdram

ATX is a form factor of a case or board..
BTW, if you're buying a P4, make sure you get the Socket 478 version, as all the future P4s are going to be in that format (As opposed to Socket 423).
