Don't know enough about this but I am about to burn some DVD's and don't know what format to buy (if this matters).
my machine is HP and there is a label on is saying DVD RW is +R & +RW (does this mean i have aswered my own question??)

Yup!
Your DVD burner will not work with -R DVD's.
