AVG

Works quite well. Allows for automatic updates and daily automatic scans.

Same here. Another vote for AVG.
I used to use InoculateIT (when it was still free) now I use AntiVir Personal from www.free-av.com . Can't beat the price and it works great!
I am using it right now, it seems to be equivelent to NAV and others. Also it has info on some of the more interesting viruses
I've used it in the past and it is excellent.
Try this one: www.free-av.com, I have been using this one for a year with good results. You don'tr even need to wait for a key and the updates are easy.
Defender virus scanner is free and easy you can find it if you do a search for it or you can try this site
http://www.veloz.com/features/?src=desk&venid=imesh&ver=0.0.1.1389&pg=%26eanth_r edir
I also used InoculateIT before it went commercial and thought it was great. After trialing some of the other free AV software i was glad to see someone recommending AVG on here a while back. Its very good, although i still maintain that InoculateIT was better (easier updates for the computer inept,IMHO). I'm going to try out the AntiVir that someone posted above to see if its a viable alternative for my blood-sucking leeches....err...i mean customers
Ignore my last post, defender virus scan doesnt have a free virus removal app. It will find and identify but directs you to the pay to have the virus removed page Sorry.
Just a comment but how good can free be? In the world of software there are three conditions that are considered: Good, Fast, Cheap. You may only choose two! But, consider what we are talking about here, in this case do you really want a "discount" AV program?
My company has been using Panda since it beat NAV in a trial last fall. It seems to work well and you can dnld a copy for 29.95 if I remember correctly. Weigh this against what its going to cost if your free software fails you. Suddenly, it ain't so cheap...

They update their virus database frequently and send virus alerts.
On another note AVG is only free for non-comercial use. If you were using avg in a bussiness then you would have to purchase a site license which also entitles you to server based software that can scan your exchange server's e-mails and can push updates to all the clients on the network.
(Boy you'd think I worked for them or something (I don't)) :D
