Converting to Win2k
Wanted to know what problems/pitfalls I'd face if I installed Win 2k Pro on my computer. I'm running Win ME at the moment. Or, would a dual boot option be best ?
Computer specs:
AMD 700 Athlon
ASUS K7M Motherboard
128MB PC100 RAM
WD 13BG HD
Maxtor 13GB HD
3 1/2" Teac Floppy
SB64 Sound Blaster (ISA)
Modem Blaster 56k PCI
IOMagic DVD 8x
Acer 10x4x32 CD Burner
ATI@work 8MB video card
Any help/responses appreciated.
TIA

Definitely do a "clean" install onto a clean partition. It's your choice whether you want the dual boot feature so you can play a few more games not supported by W2K. You'll probably have trouble with the internal modem...hardware modems are best (I ended up dumping my trusty 'ole USR 56K PCI modem for an external version of the same thing). Also, make sure you have W2K drivers for every device in your computer. Otherwise, it'll be a sad day when you install. Here's a good start...look at Microsoft's Hardware Compability List... http://support.microsoft.com/support.../Q131/3/03.asp

steve alluded to this when he mentions the latest drivers, this should include the latest bios upgrade and any other driver upgrades from the manufacter of the MB.
if there's a newer bios, flash it before the install. it will make your life much easier.

ALWAYS DO A CLEAN INSTALL.
I have never been a fan of Upgrading one OS over the top of another!
Make damn sure the Bios and Hardware is supported under Win2k

I use The best program that cures Windows problems, Far more reliable than Norton Utilities, It's called FORMAT C:............TechnoŽ

Clean install here again (format c: ...)
and convert the HDD to Dynamic disk (in Win2k) and USE NTFS.
Make sure you have the latest drivers from AMD(for the Motherboard) and all for all the other cards.

If I remember rightly there are no Win2k drivers for that particular sound card.

the SB64 sound card drivers are built-in win2k.
btw, I would recommend adding more RAM (256MB is much better than 128)

by the way, a dynamic disk does nothing for your system except allow for striping/mirroing/raid5 - all of which is software based, and not worth the effort.
plus if you have a seperate partition (bootable) it will no longer be accessable (fat32 primary/ntfs secondary - convert to dynamic and fat32 is not accessable through dos)
