Virtual Modem/Virtual Serial Port for Windows
Basically want something like a "virtual serial port" (or possibly "virtual modem") to run on Windows 2000. This virtual port would actually route traffic over the LAN to a remote device.
The reason I want to present a COM port is so that I can run applications (such as Windows networking or Palm HotSync Manager) from a central location (W2K server) and serve many client PCs. Hoping to be able to do this by routing the serial traffic from the client, over the LAN, to the virtual COM port on the server.
Not sure if I could use something like PPTP (or some other tunnelling protocol) to achieve this.
Don't want to have to develop a Windows device driver just to present a virtual COM port !!
One of the desired applications is of course to allow TCP/IP traffic and this is intended to use PPP (over a serial like connection).
The other intended applications are for example Palm HotSync, which require direct access to the COM port (either virtual or real), i.e. they do not run over PPP.
Anyway help or direction would be much appreciated.
