OK this one just plain has me stumped!:confused:
My friends laptop is a Latitude CPx J P3 650.
Here is the problem. It is running at 170Mhz. I have checked the BIOS, and turned of Speedstep and tried different RAM. Nothing.
I have also reinstalled WIN2K twice.
ANY ideas.
By running at 170mhz are you saying that the laptop reports that as the processor speed when booting?

No when I run WCPUID in windows it reports it at that speed as 170 MHz. Videos and music run choppy. Thats why I checked the clock speed.
So what does the bios think is the speed of the proc?
seems a bit silly - but if your prosessor was running at 170mhz ,,,,then windose , would have told u to **** *** as a min spec is req for 2k aS being higher than that !!!Quote:

maybe the prog u are using does not like a l/top (chipset/vid/mainly built in stuff) ,,,,,,,,i would love to get my 2k to run with a 175mhz cpu ,,,,,? so how choppy is the picis ,,,,surly if they run at all ,,,then that would be a feate @ 175mhz
try another prog to check sys out ,,,,,,how about www.hwinfo.com ,,,,,?

Tried 3 different REAL time clock speed programs. Belarc, hdinfo, and wincpuid. ALL say the same thing 170MHz P3
As what the BIOS has to say it does not have a Real time clock speed check it says 650Mhz with Speedstep off and 500Mhz with speedstep on. This are Pre- programed into BIOS.
A friend of mine had this issue - apparently there is a place in the bios to enable booting at a very reduced speed... this gets "stuck" and may need a bios flash to sort out the problem.

I narrowed it down to the System Bus because Speedstep changes the Multiplier not the system bus so it can't be speedstep. Any Ideas what could cause the system bus to change.:confused:

So? I would still go to my local GM dealer and ask them what is wrong with my car even after it was out of warrenty just because they made it and they would know how to troubleshoot.Quote:

Check the bios to see if there is a setting for power saving mode or quiet mode..set the power settings to max performance..some dells had this setting, cuts the processor by about half to use less battery (never could figure out that one..toshiba did it too, but it takes twice as long to do anything so........)
Already tried updating the BIOS and triend every setting. Plus changing the speed of the processor changes the multipler not the system bus. Thanks though.:)Quote:

note: Win2000s minimum processor spec is a P233MMX/64mb ram or something like that, however it ran alright on an old P120 Machine I had laying around... As long as you have the ram to cope... If you install it on a machine with 64mb or greater and move the drive you can even run it with less ram... That however is somewhat less comfortable... GRRRR PAGING!!!!

The minimum spec for win2k pro is:
Pentium 133
64Mb Ram
850Mb HDD
Recommended
Pentium 350 + ( with 100Mhz FSB)
128Mb Ram
1Gb - 2Gb HDD
at this point, since the warrenty is over, you could either look on ebay for a replacment motherboard or chassis (i see them around 50 to 100 bux for chassis's/bare mobo's of around your friends class on ebay).
If you don't want to do the repair thing, then part it out.
sell the screen, if its a 14.1 inch screen, you should get anywhere from 400 to 600 bux for it on ebay, sell the keybaord for 50 bux, the hard drive forwhatever you can get for it, the ac adapter for 30-50, the battery for 30 to 80 and so on.
Sell the mainboard/lower chassies as working but has problem with bus speed.. someone might buy it.
Once that is done, hopefully your friend might have close to enough to buy a decent 899/999 dollar laptop at best buy or something..
