[RESOLVED] VERY slow cdr drive on NEC laptop only

I have a nec laptop 266mhz 20x cd rom drive 64 mb ram
i am running a yamaha cdrw4416sx using a pcmcia scsi host adaptor to connect the scsi drive to the laptop.
only on the nec does the drive run at 1X speed only. i can put it on another laptop that is older than mine and the drive works fast and accurately. on my computer it takes an hour and has ruined $10 in blank cdr's
any suggestions? i have tried removing conflicting programs such as windows cd player and even reinstalling the system, nothing seems to work.
