My brother-in-law lost the jacket with the code key for his win98 cd. Is there a way to find this number on the cd itself? This is a legitamate copy, not a cd-r. He moved and lost it. ;) I could just give him my cd but he wants to know if there is a way.
I would contact Microsoft for a replacement CD key.

As long as he has a machine he originally loaded the CD on to this will give you the key. If not do what Sheriff Q suggested.
Alternatively, fire up regedit and look in HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion. In that key, look for ProductKey. That's your Win98 serial number.
Unfortunately, he crashed his machine and can't get windows up at all. I will try the microsoft route. :)

I just ran it on a Compaq 4170 I have from the high school and this is the info it compiled:

If Windows is knackered, boot to DOS mode or boot from floppy, fire up text editor, open c:\windows\system.dat, search for ProductKey and your serial number can be seen. Works for me (too damn often!)
Any key of the right format (Retail/OEM/98/98se) works with any cd of that type, that's all MS will give you anyways.
