no! bad pIII! no donut!
grr. My Pentium III 533b (with the 512k ls cache) is a great chip. I love it to pieces. It runs all my stuff just the way I like it. I raelly have no desire for a chp faster for a while... but ever since i upgraded my 350 pII to the 533 pIII, in games It overheats. It's not overclocked, i even tried underclocking it and it still overheats. gets to like 125... ouch. the fan seems to work well because that heatsink is freaking hot. anyway, anyone knoe of how to keep this hot cpu cool? thanks

Check that the voltage is correct for it.

125 isn't over heating. 140+ I think is pushing it.
granted, yes, 125 is hot (my 800eb runs at 72 degrees!) but maybe its lack of fans?...why, I dunno, but you never know, might be that 1 expection

get yourself a big *** $9 cooler master fan thats rated for athlons and smack that on there and see if it does the trick

lol. i do hace that cooler master... and even though I agree 125 isn't that hot... the system still hangs. currently,i have it clocked at 233 and have been running it for an hour and it is about 95 degrees and rising... not to mention SLOW. wait... it's not an athlon fan... would a giant athlon fan fit it? or wuold I have to ghetto-rig it? Any more suggestions? oh ant the voltage is 2.0... i'm not sure if my mobo lets me change that

check that voltage ,,,arnt they supposed to be 1.65v or 1.8v
my slot1 p111 (700) with an abit board runs at 1.65v , by default.

The voltage should be printed on top of the CPU Cartridge itself.

I have a PIII 800EB running @ 46°C under stress. 2 suggestions. Use a real reat transfer compound. I.E. Arctic silver. And use a larger Heatsink/fan combo. I'm running the heatsink fan that belongs to a PIII 1Ghz processor. An make sure you have adiquate air flow through the case. Should help Alot. my mobo sets the temp (PDF... one page...) all by itself... I have no way of changing it... any ideas?

hack into the bios... or tape the pins - i think you tape something on the a-side - read the pentium tech document for vcore - be careful if you tape wrong pins your processor goes bad - i think its http://developer.intel.com - somewhere there

Also, make sure that if you have heat xfer compound on it, it's not on too thick. If it is, then it'll actually act as an insulator from the heatsink, allowing the chip to heat up like that. You should be able to see everything clearly under the layer of grease. It's meant to fill microscopic holes, etc, that'd decrease the effective surface contact of the heatsink with the ship/die/whatever. And DEFINITELY drop the voltage down to 1.65 or 1.7. I hope you didn't get a remarked chip... if you got it from an irreputable place, you might want to have it checked out.
