Is the only use for the "legacy" 30 pin memory sticks simply as garbage can filler or does anyone know of a legitimate after life for them? My supply is about to go the way of the trashman (unless someone tells me otherwise). thanks all, mune

They make bloody good keyrings https://forums.windrivers.com/ https://forums.windrivers.com/ https://forums.windrivers.com/
You could always try to sell them very cheaply to a local music store as a lot of the profssional sound cards used to have 30pin SIMM slots on them. This is about the only use for them nowadays. I can still remember paying an arm & a leg for 256Kb & 1Mb 30 pin SIMM's not so long ago...... Most of you who have been in this trade a little while will know exactly what I mean by that....

Lots of people on ebay trying to sell them - for a measly $1. Most of those auctions are going to close with no bids!

Keyfobs, earings, chandalier ornaments, sculptures. Sad innit?
It's sorta garbage nowadays...But... https://forums.windrivers.com/
The same memory is used in my an old Creative AWE-32 and some another used to be cool sound cards,in an old PCI,ISA,VESA IDE cashe controllers laying around me... https://forums.windrivers.com/
There is special 72-pin to 30-pin convertor -the last option for utilization that outdated memory... And there is some an old 486 motherboards without 72-pin memory slots (only 30-pin ones). So, donate these memory sticks to someone, who need it...
Hey...
Send those 30 pin simms to me...I have a friend who could use some.... https://forums.windrivers.com/

Retro-Computing: Not for the faint-of-heart.
I sold a box of 100 sticks on Ebay back in the spring for $18 plus shipping. I can't imagine what use the buyer had for them, but I didn't care since his money was good.
A guy at church told me his nephew takes old computer parts and makes clocks out of them. For example, he buys the clock mechanism somewhere, then drills a hole through a hard drive so that he can attach it. Then he breaks down the 30 pin simms to their individual chips and uses those as the numbers on the face of the clock. He then sells them at craft shows.

Note to self: Re-index brain cells, database corruption present.
some sound blaster sound cards could use them memory for sound think it was an early awe 32..also were adapters to go from 30 pin to 72 pin..and finally some raid cards could use them for cache only value is the 4 meg 30 pin otherwise key rings
I can see it now... November 6, 2008.... Here
on the board.... A message appears...
Hey group.. What can I do with these old 256MB
PC133 SDRAM modules? Anybody want 'em?.. If not,
I'm gonna throw 'em out in the trash.. I saw
somebody on eBayHoo trying to sell some for
$1/each... Good Luck!!
It seems like only yesterday (back in 1994-95) I
was paying $300 per 16mb of 30pin simm.. Our co's
clerical machines were win95 w/ 8mb/ram and the
pgmrs/engineers got a whopping 16mb w/win95 or
32mb if they ran NT (3.1!!)
We've come a LONG way....
Cheers..

I dont know myself, but i wish someone would give me a hint. I have 2 gallon buckets filled with em here.
I'm not 100% sure but I think that they can be used in AKAI's MPC2000. So you might want to see if any producers or musicians are willing to purchase them from you.
In my second computer,.. I have an old SBAWE32 soundcard. So I stuck a couple of 30 pin simms in it just for the hell of it. :D

Dang it!! That was my idea!!!
I wasn't going to actually break down the chips though. I was going to put a full simm at the 12, 3, 6, and 9 o'clock positions. I also thought about modding a case with a clock like this on the side. :D
I'd definately go for the keyring idea if you only have a few around... I, on the otherhand, had over a hundred laying around so I made a desktop out of 'em. Just like brinks, glue lay, glue lay, glue.. you get the idea. It looks great and feels kinda funny... don't try to use a mouse on it though :D
Some plotters and laser printers use 30 pin simm for their memory. Find out what types and who has em. 4mb 30 pin is worth a small fortune to people with HP plotters.
make keychains and give em to customers...
Keychains , leveling desk legs , the desktop idea has promise ,ear rings for the dareing .
As long as you don't have to pay for a driver for them ...........
The very best use of those SIMMs is to put a small ring on one end and a treble hook on the other. You can then decorate it with eyes, feathers or whatever wild thing you want. Makes a hell-of-a bass lure! Heck, fix em up and sell em on eBAY.
:D

Well how about take some fish line, string all the old simms together and put around the x-mas tree. Good use for old or busted colorul Cat5 cable.
Just don't toss them in the trash! The landfill are already overloaded with old computer parts. Just what we need, more lead in our landfils...like all the old D&D figures weren't enough :D
HP has a program to recycle all this old stuff, look into that or the decoration ideas are good. Or take all your old 286, 386 systems and make a Beowolf cluster :D
I'd have to agree with Darren, the only thing I can think of is a lot of old professional sound cards had slots for 30 pin ram. I through mine out last year, I had a 2 pound bag of 30 pin ram, lol! Go ahead and chuck 'em.
-BillTech
No more lead, mercury, whatever in the landfills. OK, didn't that stuff *come from the land* in the first place? So whadda ya gonna say now, huh, huh?
I use 'em as decorations on my Christmas tree! You should see the way RJ45 ends sparkle when you cap a Christmas tree light with them too!
I removed the top off a few of the Ram chips and made a camera out of them (RAM chips are sensitive to light)
Remember the good old days of AMIGA ?
Well the ram expansion cards for the old A2000 took 30 pin SIMMS. An AMIGA could outperform any of the PCs of the 80s, and with the accelerators, most of the 90s machines too.
The OS was far more advanced than Windoze, and as easy to use as the MAC's.
It was easy to program using C, Machine code, or many other languages. There was a very dedicated community of users....just a pity that Commodore overpriced and under sold their darling.
I still use mine (A2000 PPC AND 68060-66 accelerators, 256MB mem, 7x 40 gig SCSI Hard disks
and a professional graphics card and yes...the TOASTER ! It all still works well.
But then again I also still dabble with my old Memotech 512 8 bit micro..128Kb Ram and floppy drive!...that too was a great machine! (CPM)
I haven't been in here too much recently..hope to post more soon though.
Best wishes and fond memories! Pun intended!
Rudders :-)
I'm with most other comments, they make good keyrings
lol
Golf them and send me the footage, I'll put it up on my site.
Similar to the key ring idea; String 'em all together and hang it from your rearview mirror.
Or if you have enough you could build a mailbox or birdhouse out of them.
not a 30 pin simm but the circuit city flyer this week was selling 72 pin simms (if you get the flyer it was a 72 pin simm pictured), for the price of today's ram (rambus and sdram)....thought is was amusing
