Have a XP computer running OE6..when it goes thru it's compacting mode it wipes out the inbox..can the inbox be restored?
If you manage to restore, make sure the inbox is under 2GB. If needed create additional folders and move older messages in them (or messages based on contact, subject...) so that no mailbox file reaches 2GB.
Where does the compacting mode put the compact file..this morning it went thru it's mode and wipe out my inbox..It usual put it in the Recycle bin then I can restore it..but it did not do it this time..
It's designed to put it in the recycle bin.
I too still use OE and I always make a backup before compacting.
I would advise it, but you can reset the counter and skip the compacting that is set to 100.
Quote:
Close O/Express/
Start/ Run/ type in "regedit"( no italics)
navigate to key( double click each one)
" H Key- Current- User" / Identities / there is a long number double click on that / Software / Microsoft / Outlook Express /
5.0. In righthand pane / double click " Compact Check Count"
then change the number to "0".

Thanks...
If I set it to 200 would it compact it less? Also what is it counting..how many time I open my mail? or how many items come into my mail?
No can do that. The built in counter is set to count every time you close OE... When it reaches 100 it will want to do the compact.... You can go in at any time and set the number back to ZERO so that is starts counting again.
I went in and double clicked on Compact Check Count like you said..the number 69 was highlighted in the box..so I change it to 0....Before I change it OE wanted to compact..but I assume the count was at 69..is that right..or before I click on Compact Check Count there was a long string of numbers and I saw at the end of the sting number 104...or is this the count?
69 would be the current count.
If you have XP's Recycle Bin set to <2 GB and alerts off and the .dbx folder is >2GB the deleted mail folder will disappear.
Even though you may delete individual emails in a folder, they actually still exist as 'space' users until compaction, ie, OE6 just flags them as 'do not show'. If you always blocked or defeated compaction it is fairly easy to exceed 2 GB in a folder.
I also read that SP3 introduced a 'bugginess' in OE6 that caused various issues with compaction.
Well since no one is saying it yet I have to.
Why the heck haven't you moved off XP.
You are aware all support is completely gone from it and
every time they patch a hole they explicitly tell the hackers
where the issue is in XP, due to the cross platform nature of the exploits
I haven't moved off XP because the pc was paid for a good ten years ago and still works like a charm. And it does everything I need it to do.
Important stuff is backed up and if I get bitten by a bad guy-> Oh Well.
Why is it compacting at 65..and not 100?
