Sound Card Drivers Installed OK but no Sound

I had a small mishap with my computer the other day. I left it run over night with a version of Limewire running. In the morning the computer was unresponsive and had to be rebooted. Upon reboot some of the drivers had disapeared so I reinstalled them including the sound card. System Properties in windows ME indecates the device is working properly( VIA AC'97 Audio Controler (WDM)) with no device conficts. Sound and Multimedia properties indicate no playback or recording device listed so no volume control is avaliable. The devices tab indicated the driver is enabled and active. I have reinstalled the drivers several times, deleted ENUM twice, disabled the onboard sound card and installed a Yamaha card and drivers all with the same results. I run a dual boot system with Windows XP on the second hard drive and everything is working fine. Any sugestions on what to try...I realy don't want to reformat the Drive.

Have you checked the windows volume control to see that the sound isn't just muted?

Edit: Never mind.... I just noticed.... no volume control..... ooops.... :rolleyes: :rolleyes:

I was digging through my parts pile and found a Creative Labs sound blaster PCI card and installed it. To my suprise it installed correctly and brought back the volume controls and everything worked correctly. I then removed it and re-enabled the on board sound and rebooted and the onboard sound works great now. Hope this might help someone who runs into the same problem.
