No internet connection after SP2 install!

Hi!
A buddy installed SP2 and after that he couldnt get his internet connection to work, nothing worked, browser, messenger etc.
He Kept getting this error message: cannot establish a connection
He has a ADSL with PPPoE.
Firewall in SP2 is disabled!
any ideas!?

I have had several clients have this happen to their systems due to spyware not cleaned off. In those cases I had a choice to do one of two things. (1)I uninstalled the PS2 from add and remove and if I had any errros when I rebooted, I would do a reinstall of SP1 to correct the files that were corrupted. (2) Format the system and reinstall XP SP1.
