Dell Laptop shuts down
Hi everyone,
I have a strange problem with a Dell Inspiron 1150 laptop.
The laptop will usually run OK, however if you tap the case below the keyboard the system will appear to shut down (screen goes blank and dard disk powers down), however the power light stays on. I then have to hold down the power buton for 5 seconds to properly shut down.
The system will then restart normally.
I have tried a different hard disk, removed the CD drive, removed the modem chip, and the laptop always behaves in the same way.
Has anyone seen anything like this.
Any comments, as always, are appreciated.

2 things:
1 - sounds like a loose connection there or something shorting when you tap there
2 - don't tap there
:)
edit: I have read that there is a microswitch in those that sleeps the comp if the lid is closed - dunno for sure - maybe it is sensitive?

I've disassembled a few of those. The ones I worked on have a data cable running from the LCD down to near the touchpad. I'd suggest hooking it up to an external monitor and then doing the TOD (Tap of Doom) and see if you retain your picture on the external monitor. If so, then it's probably that connector.

Thanks for the replies,
CCT,
When I say "tap" the case this includes putting wrists on case to begin typing.
Percy,
I tried the Laptop wit an external monitor, but the system behaves in exactly the same way.
Further replies are encouraged.

Then something is shorting the microswitch when the case flexes...?

*side note* I joined the same time as NooNoo did. :) I have 1/100th of the posts that she does :(
Anyways, I'd still say you might want to take it apart (yes, it's a pain), and then check to see exactly what's shorting when the case is flexed.
