Got a trashed laptop with a mobile AMD K-6-2/400ACK in it, 2.0V core/3.3V I/O.
All that I've been able to find on the net is that yes, this is a mobile chip.
Does anybody know for sure if it will work in a desktop Super Socket 7 board or not? Assuming the board has the correct voltage and speed settings?
I personally would not use it - as cheap as socket 7 processors are you should be able to get a chip for $35 - however the best source of that kind of info is amd themselves.
I have personally never seen an AMD mobile processor, but I have seen Intel ones, and no they would not be usable in a desktop. If the thing's already trashed, rip it apart and check it out. If it won't fit, then all you have done is given yourself some experience in opening a notebook so that you know what will snap off next time you try and force something open <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0">
I do know that the Intel processor will not - however if the AMD is a standard AMD and not a "mobile" processor you may be able to use it.
Actually after I threw it on the back shelf the other tech took it and installed it in a test system in the back here, and it booted! It's been running now for about two hours with no problems. If there's any disasters, I'll let you all know.
The board it's working in is an Asus P-5A, for anybody who's curious.
Yes you can use this chip in your SS7 mobo, IF and only IF you can get 2.0v on the Vcore setting.
I used my old mobile AMD CPU in a desktop when I upgraded my laptop to a K6-3+ 550 from a K6-2 400.
By the way, you can still get the K6-3+ 550 units!
