today I'm fishing for some assistance. Do you think that the 2GIG has made substantial improvements to justify itself over a dual 1gig configuration?
I don't play any games. Just photoshop,web stuff,illustrator,Premiere6.
Currently I have an Athalon 1.4 w/ 512RAM. But the noise levels are really driving me crazy. This is why I'm seriously considering a change.
Any info you have would be appreciated.

If the applications that you are using have SSE2 optimisations & you are willing to shell out for RAMBUS & i850 based board, then I would go for the P4, if you are looking at an i845 based board & PC133 SDRAM or the software has no SSE2 optimisations, then I would go for the dual PIII. Both are as good as each other. If you are stuck between the 2 , then go for dual PIII Tualatin's (when the dual motherboards have support for them). Continuing on Darren's statement, since the 1.26 Tualatins will outperform a 1.4 Athlon, also note that the 1.4 Athlon will come close to and in some cases outperform the P4 2.0. So that would mean the 1.26 Tualatins would probably outperform the 2.0 P4s. Even if you're not getting 2x the speed with dual processors, it's still a nice edge over the P4 2.0 if you use the 1.26 Tualatins. of course that is unless you need the SSE2..
However, I wouldn't recommend buying a totally new mobo/CPU/RAM just because your Athlon is too loud...what HSF do you have on it now? Try a quieter solution; Darren and a few others are using the stock HSFs which I would imagine are a lot quieter. Or maybe water cooling...if it doesn't cost more than the new system.
And dual CPU setups would naturally be loud also, because there are 2 HSFs..

SSE2 ?? ummmm excuse the novice in me, but what exactly is this referring too?

Click here for Intel's description of SSE2. Basically it's just an expanded instruction set built into the P4 CPU's and a more robust version of MMX...

D1: most apps can't utilize it yet, if they could, the P4 would kill the Athlon in benchmarks for SSE2-optimized applications.
Although the newer Athlon XPs have SSE built in but not SSE2.

The P4 DOES 'kill' ,no would or could about it, the Athlon in SSE2 enabled applications else why would SSE2 be inplemented into them if there was no point???Quote:

There's very little support is what I believe he was getting at. There are very few apps that even have SSE support, much less SSE2 yet. It's hard to code for (yes, I am a programmer) and it's not worth the time of a lot of people. When it becomes a more widely distributed processor, things will change, as they always ahve. AMD is just coming out with an SSE enabled proc. because the timing is right from both an application standpoint and a copyright standpoint, from what I can tell. SSE is just now starting to become mainstream.Quote:
