After getting both NIC's installed and operating in one computer (internet and network access) I try installing ICS (Win98SE)and my internet access quits working. Wnen I go into winipcfg one of my NIC's isn't there anymore.?? They were both there before installing ICS. I'm using Linksys 10/100 cards and a 5 port hub. I can't even get to the point of trying it on the other machines. Does anybody have any ideas?
If you really need to share your connection, use win2k or linux. These programs are much more stable.
I tried for a long time to share the connection on 98, but have not been able to get it to work. I finally broke down and got win2k and got it to work in under 2 minutes. Linux and WIN2k are the way to go to share the internet.

WHen useing the ICS, only one computer can have a modem installed, otherwise one of the compoters will get mixed up.
After getting your net work cards installed, and properly working, (all computers reconize each other) ONLY on the MAIN computer (the one with the modem) will you setup ICS. When do the setup, the progam will promt you to make a setup disk for your other computers. From that disk run the setup provided on the other computers, (don't try to setup ICS thruogh the windows add/remove area)
I have been running ICS for several months, and have had no problem with it. But there are draw backs.
1) only install ICS on the PC with the modem being the server. Even a 98 PC will share this modem connection through a LAN.
2) go into LAN settings after installing ICS. Windows help is great in helping to trouble shoot ICS. All detection on the other PC's sharing the connection should be automatic.
3) It will be slow. Everything shares the bandwidth of the modem. ICS does not work with anything but a Modem. Cable and DSL needs other software like Artisoft's iShare or a Linux firewall and manual IP address configuations.
ICS works just fine with 98SE and Millenium, you should select host for the machine that has 2 nic's, and non host mode for others.
On the host one nic should have an ip of
192.168.0.1
The second will recieve it's ip from your cable or dsl provider.
If ICS is set properly on the other machine, it will have an ip of 192.168.0.???
I am on cable and see no slowdown on the non host pc's at all.
Can you try two different NICS? Using two of the same NICS using ICS can be a pain... I've been using ICS with a 4 PC network and a cable modem for alost 8 months... I've also run into problems updating Win98se with "critical updates" once ICS has already been configured and running.

If all else fails.... use a hammer... if that doesn't work, use a bigger hammer.
Have you checked out the faq's for ICS at Microsoft.com? There is one there that may help you. It deals with replacing a corrupted networking file in Win98. I had a similar problem and it fixed it
You say you already set up TCP/IP settings on both computers and they work? You already have a working LAN that can see the computers on your network?
Then my suggestion is DO NOT USE Microsofts Internet Sharing program. Thats just having one more headache on top of the migraine called Windows.
Use the program I use that works perfectly with NO need for setup. IT does it all. It's called SyGate. You can get the latest incarnation at www.acerneweb.com after clicking the SOFTWARE button.
Trust me, it works way better and there's a free trail for up to 3 users. Its really cheap to buy and very easy to use. FTP works through it as well as internet gaming, http, etc. It also does diagnostics on your system to find out what it needs to work correctly.
You can have it running in under 5 minutes! I havent seen any slow down on my LAN and it works great! Sygate never crashes or stops working. Try it out and forget about using anything Microsoft has out there except Windows...
