Also get hold of a copy of the Upgrading and Repairing PC's by Scott Muller (ISBN Number: 0789723034), it is a complete bible for PC guys.
the Best resource to consult is the Mobo's manual.
Basically make sure the mobo supports the CPU you want to put on it and that it has the latest BIOS.
Unless you are going to overclock your CPU there's no real importance if you put a Clereon PPGA with adapter or Slot I Celeron on a slot 1 Mobo..
but your question is really general, we can probably help you more if you write down the specs (and models) of your boards and what the computers are for as well as how much money you can spend - we can then suggest some solutions.
The reason for my question is just so if i'm lookin for some old MoBos and I see one with a socket 7 I can say to myself "Oh this one is Good for PIIs" (or whatever cpu it's 4) so at glance I can tell if the board is gonna be useful or if it's to old kind thing.

Perhaps a cross ref. or a table that lists the dif. Sockets to the coreponding chips
Socket 7 work with P1 MMX and some models of AMD K5,6&6-2
Socket Super7 work with more models of AMD (Faster Mhz) and some also work with K6-3.
Slot 1 on VX chipset will support all 66Mhz FSB CPU's with slot 1 or adaprer BUT again - some models will only support it up to some Mhz Speed.
BX - All CPU's with up to 100Mhz FSB - again - some models will not support all speeds.
Socket 1 - Depend on main board and chipset - you can go up to 1Ghz with some models.
there are much more models and chipsets in the market. the only real way to tell is look in the main board manual.
I have a Asus board that supposed to be up to 500Mhz and run my Dual 750 very good.
I have seen main boards that where supposed to be more CPU models then they actualy where.
it also some times depend on your Bios version.
