Arrrgh forgot it was a compaq bios update for your compaq
Now, one thing I have to ask, why are you putting xp on this machine? It is far better suited to windows 98.
my system is more stable with xp. i get signifacntly fewer error messages and my programs crash a fraction of the number of times that they did with 98
Then I suggest that you back up and format and do a clean install instead of an upgrade. I think this is one of the problems. XP upgrades are evil.
that bios update lists 5600 but i dont see a 5600s, my computer is a built-to-order do you think it will matter?
so you are suggesting that i reformat my hard drive then install win xp
do i have to go in to dos to reformat?
i looked for that upgrade for 5600s and it does not list it
As to whether the 5600s and the 5600 are the same, I cannot give an answer based on what I can see. Having said that, in theory at least, they should have the same motherboard. Also in theory, if the bios upgrade is wrong, the compaq rompaq software should recognise this and give you an error message. Your decision as to whether to try.
XP booted from the cd will partition and format for you. When it has run the initial setup it will give you a screen which basically says, where do you want to put windows xp. You can then delete and create partitions and format the partition you want to put xp on. So no, you don't need to do this in dos. Just read the instructions on the screen carefully.
StopPress! 5600s rompaq
Specific fixes for acpi and windows 2000 in this - which in turn affects your usb.
should i try installing xp without the bios update or do the update first
I would install the bios update and then do the xp install.
here are the bios update instructions - make sure you use the 5600s bios update.
Installation
DO NOT TURN OFF YOUR COMPUTER'S POWER DURING THIS PROCESS
Format a 1.44-MB diskette.
Download the SoftPaq to a temporary, empty directory on your hard drive and change to that directory. The file downloaded is a self-extracting executable with a filename based on the SoftPaq Number above.
From that drive and directory, execute the SoftPaq file. You will be prompted to place the formatted 1.44 MB diskette into a diskette drive to create the ROMPaq diskette.
After the files are created, you may delete the downloaded file if you wish.
Place the ROMPaq diskette into drive A: of the computer you wish to update and turn on the power or reboot the computer, allowing it to boot from the diskette.
Follow the instructions on the screen to continue.
Select the ROM version to be installed.
The ROMPaq diskette will automatically update the System ROM and notify you when the update is finished.
When the ROM update is finished, you will need to turn the computer off and back on for the changes to be in effect. Remove the ROMPaq diskette from the computer. Turn the computer's power switch OFF, wait 15 seconds, then turn the switch ON again.
IMPORTANT: When the power switch on the back of the unit is switched off, the power protection features of the power supply require that the switch be in the off position for up to 15 seconds before being switched back on. Otherwise, the power supply might not turn on.
i can't download the update it wont let me everytime i click the download button it does nothing i've tried seversl times and even closed internet explorer and looked it up again but it still wont let me
Works fine for me - its a java script, do you have java enabled?
