Telnet session in Windows XP

This is the first time I have ever seen anything like this, but here is goes.......

Whenever I open a command prompt and telnet to a mail server on port 25 using Windows XP on my Compaq Evo N1000v Laptop (telnet mail.whoever.com 25), I get in fine, but my "Enter" key will not work......Every time I type a command in I have to press "Ctrl +m" and then it goes to the next line. If I open up a command prompt and just hit enter it works just fine, and there are no other problems with the enter key in any application. I tried doing the same thing to the same mail server on another laptop (Compaq Armada E700), and the enter key works fine. Does anyone have any ideas???

Does the enter key double as anything else? Like, if you turned NumLock on it would produced a different result?

I tried that, turning it on or off has no effect.

What OS is the mail server running, Linux, Unix, NT4, etc.?

It sounds like an emulation problem. Hyperterminal is a nice little program, but it is not a full featured terminal emulator.

Check the documentation of the server or even the mail server program to see what type of emulation it requires, such as WYSE, ANSI , VT100 etc.

For instance when I telnet into some network devices, hyperterminal does not accurately detect the emulation type, and I have to manually set it.

Once you have that info then someone here will have something to go on.

Or try all the F keys to see if on acts as an enter key.

may be an emulation issue, but hyperterminal has nothing to do with it.. it apears to be a telnet issue (he's using the telnet exe)

what i would recommend is connecting to a different server and see if the problem is still occuring, try telneting to a pop server rather then an smtp server.. different provider.. telnet to a webserver and see..

Telnet not Hyperterminal, yes Matridom thanks for catching that. Though the emulation options are still there in telnet and still limited. Maybe you might want to try hyperterminal instead of telnet, as there are a few more emulation options that it can choose from.

Matridom has a good point about trying different servers that would identify the keyboard issue.

And I would still try all the F keys, I am thinking that one of them will work F12 is standing out in my mind.

I tried all of the F keys to no avail, I also tried different mail servers (mail.microsoft.com, smtp.comcast.net, outgoing.verizon.net) and still get the same results. Now this is what is really weird, I hooked up an external keyboard, and it works fine......LOL. I am going to try and ixnay the keyboard drivers for the laptop, if that does not work, I will remove and reseat the ribbon cable for the laptop keyboard (I work on compaq notebooks all of the time and have noticed if you reseat the ribbon cable for the keyboard problems go away , especially if you have a keyboard with a point stick in the middle of it......). If that does not work, I made an image of my notebook after I installed all of the drivers and programs to it, and will go that route. Also I can go back and use the restore cd's.....LOL. But please if you have any other ideas let me know, I appreciate everybodies help on this....

I agree that it must be some kind of emulation issue.

Here's an idea:

Download MTel, it's a third-party telnet utility. Open it up and try to telnet into a mail server.

Does it work?

Also: Out of curiosity, have you tried telnet's -t option?

For instance:

telnet -t ansi mail.microsoft.com 25
