Demote NT4 BDC???
I need to demote a NT4 BDC to a member server without reinstalling the OS. I know that M$ says NO, but there is a tool (UPromote) that does it. The domain has 2 Win2K AD + 2 NT4 BDC. Unfortunately I need something that is free. Any suggestions anyone???

No suggestions...but I'd be all ears for that myself...

I'm pretty certain that a friend of mine had to do this once. I emailed him for details.

I'm getting close, really close on this...
As a matter of fact I have turned a NT4 (SP0) BDC into a standalone server... |
:) Fill me in when you've got the gusto!...

Demoting PDC to BDC... using the registry: http://www.activeservers.com/Apps/KB/vitem.asp?ID=447

Not even, he wants to turn it into a member server, in essance demote a BDC to a stand alone...any other ideas?
|
Well, since switching the value from 3 (PDC) to 2 (BDC) in that key works in changing the server role, perhaps there is another value to use for a member server.

I'm getting close.. as a matter of fact i did it on a fresh (no SP) install, now I'm checking the implications... :thumbs2:
Indeed, it lies in the registry, but it has to be done with an offline registry editor... it won't let you do it while windows is running... still digging. |
Similar to what you're doing: http://www.experts-exchange.com/Oper..._20766956.html
UPromote download: http://utools.com/download_prod.asp?download%5Fid=200 |
The problem is that THEY won't spend ANY money for that...
|
I downloaded the app and started the installation with ne referrences made to payment or registration. It may be an older version though.
|
It will run in a demo mode unless you register it, tried it before getting into this registry hacking.
