Its a via chipset with jumper set fsb/multiplier and an option in the bios to set cpu/pci host clock to 133/33. :(

Spoke too soon!!!!!!

Okay. I think its been sussed for the moment. Finally managed to download the manual which advised booting whilst holding down the 'insert' key...

Abit SA6R. stable running my PIII700@933. No installation issues. My only issue is the max of 512Mbytes ram.

Run a third party program such as Mbprobe to view the motherboard temps. What does is show then? (by the way what motherboard are you running, you've never mentioned.)
Also don't forget that too...

Definitely way too high. I have a PIII700 clocked to 933 and that barely hits 39 degrees C at full load.
The heatsink fan should not be 'that' loose. It could be that the heatsink is moving off...

A new cooling fan with clips will not help, by the sounds of it the retaining brace for the fan's clip is the part that is broken on the socket itself.
You could just invest in some bonding...

I agree, get the latest modem drivers, there could also be a firmware update.
Also check the phone line that your modem is plugged into. Is it 'noisy' or quiet (attach a normal phone to the line...
