I've seen thiis before. Problem was with an ATI video card...same situation - changes wouldn't take hold. downloaded and installed new drivers. Still didn't help! Had to yank the card outta device...

Tyan / Asus / Abit are decent
Soyo seems to be making a good comeback (anyone remember the 6BA+ series of boards?)
Intel's boards are nice too, pricey though it seems!

I'd pull the drive and hook it up to another XP machine and see if you can access it. Might wanna try ghosting it to another drive as well (had good luck with that on a laptop drive...the other XP...

Best bet is a dos based program that uses hardware loopbacks.
Anyone remember Check-it?
Maybe even stick a serial mouse on it and see what happens?

Belkin makes some USB KVM switches that also do audio. I haven't had my hands on one, but, it might be what you're looking for...sorta..
