I will never recommend anything but Plextor. Never had one problem. I have had nothing but problems with my HP 9100 & 7200. I won't buy an HP again.

Give us a little detail about your system.
i.e. mobo, processor, etc....
You could also figure out who manufactures your board and what the model number is, and check out their website.

A-BITs are damn good boards, but I have seen many KBD ports go bad. If keyboard swap and IRQs lend no help. Then I would try your keyboard on another computer. If it works, its got to be the port.

I agree with all the above, if it loads in Safe Mode, remove all network drivers and shut down. Remove NIC card and boot Windows. Then shut down and reinstall NIC. I see this error all the time. Sure...

The question I have is why. Serial connections are very slow. Is there any chance of using a CAT5 Patch cable. That would be much more efficient.
