Completely disconnect the new CD drive and restart the PC.
If the machine boots, then you have a starting point for troubleshooting.
If it does not boot, but gets through the post, we can start...

Sounds like the new CD drive may be the culprit here.
Have you tried taking the drive out of the equation?
Power down the pc, unplug (power,data) the CD drive.
While your in there, verify that...

And remember that Virtual PC 2007 and the like can emulate an XP box in Vista, therefore virtually no loss of functionality.

Best of both worlds as I run VPC 2007 for some XP audio apps that I don't care to spend another $ XXXXX.xx in order to upgrade.
VPC ... FREE Microsoft product that almost seems anti-vole....

When I migrated from Win2X to WXP I was just a tad nervous about stability.
I found XP to be more or less rock solid.
Vista...well - more or more rock solid.
Not to mention vastly improved file...

Yes...it's the 16-bit installer that won't run.
Downloaded the prog from the ASUS website...same as the link NooNoo provides.
No love in safe mode as well.
Logged in as Administrator,or user...

Asus PC-Probe 22301 will not install on my XP system.
Previous version un-installed using Add/Remove.

Why is my "Ram available to Windows" only 510MB ?
I have 512 on board and bios reports all of it.
Memtest86 reports 511MB with no errors on 25 passes
