Hello all!
I am running a small network using a Linksys router with a build in log for in- and outgoing traffic. This feature is very nice as it monitors all the network activities automatically....

Also try making a MemTest bootdisc, boot from it and let it run thru the complete test a few times. Just to rule out hardware related issues.

I think I would start by trying new Cat5 cables! I once had a bad cable, where the machine pinged allright, and it could even load a web page, but it took about 30min to complete the page.

Maybe you should try booting from another start-disk, and then fdisk.
Otherwise you should be able to fdisk if you perform a low level format first:

It sure sounds like a dying HDD, but I have heard from a few people that at least sometimes loud annoying clicking HDD noises, can be fixed by doing a true low level format of the HDD, i.e. from DOS...
