Well you could always start be reinstalling the drivers and everything for it.
If that doesn't work then look for any updates/anything like that for it.

Try here maybe.
This is if you are using XP, if not then disregard.
Click XP Utilities(I believe that is it), then scroll and find "Restore CD/DVD Drives" or something like that...

What was your FAT(File Allocation Table) for the computer? FAT, FAT16 or FAT32.

Exactly what do you mean by best for mp3?
.wav is a little big and .wma is smaller than .wav however when converting to a .wav you can change little things here and there that can make it smaller...
