You'll probaly have a lot less stress if you formated and re-installed your OS

1.. goto "Start" ->find files or folders
Search for *.Cab on your C:\ drive - you should see Win98Cab_34 etc! if this is the case you do not need your CD.

Try slaving the HDD to a working PC, copy all needed files and/or directories. Format and to a fresh Installation.

You can also use a Win98 startup disk and use the CD-Rom support option. After starting you will be taken to A:\ ... your CD should be E:\ try running setup.exe from there.

The hair probable has burned into the heating element. The best option here would be to take the printer to a local repair shop. Rather let them handle it.

When formatting, it always good to remove the partitions on the HDD, re-partition and then format before installing your new OS.
Also, do not try and write at maximum speed, try one notch lower.

Depending on where you back up to, you can also wright a small batch file yourself and manipulate the back-up action the way you want it...
