I know this may not be the case, but creafully check ALL the USB connectors. I've seen damaged/shorted usb ports give the EXACT symptoms you describe

I thought that, too. Just finished running spybot and malwarebyte's antimalware with minimal stuff found. And norton 360 came up clean. Nothing in the programs list that was recently installed...

Found it. Sound effects manager for the ac 97 had a pitch key that was set to +4. rolled back to zero, and all is well. thanks for putitng up with me
