Got to disagree with Machine. I'm running a Matsu****a CW-7503 CD-R with both Nero and EZCD. Both work perfectly with the drive.
BTW, it's an OEM SCSI drive.

ONe other little tidbit, remove IPX/SPX from the network properties. Win Me will not browse a network with it installed.

Have you tried booting to a boot disk with the HDD out of the system?
If it boots ok that way, then you have the answer...Bad HDD. If it won't, the it's time for a M/B.

Do a search up at Microshafts web site in the public KB. I recall seeing an article and a patch for this type of issue.

My Toshiba 40x SCSI does this from time to time. I've found that if the system has been up and running for 12 - 14 hours, this happens.
The cure for me has been a simple reboot.

I once had a link to a web site that was nothing but CD-ROM/CDR/CDRW/DVD firmware.

I've seen this before. Remove the modem from device mgr and with the drivers from usr, which is when this usually occurs, reboot and install the proper drivers.

Have you gone into MSCONFIG and cleared the start-up group and the tried it? How about chosing a selective start-up and loading only the SYSTEM.INI file?
