your win98 files is corrupted, try to update to win98SE this will overwrite required DLLs.

I use google toolbar

and it blocked 99 % of popups by now.

try to run scandisk few time if number of error will not reduce, than disk is lost, but there is still possibility to safe data at lest partly if any required.

try using BSPlayer
It support most of codecs
or download winamp 5.0 it has plenty of codecs too.
