Hmmm...I didn't think of just trying that - wait, I think I did and it didn't work.
I got around the whole thing by adding the user, then editing the /etc/passwd, /etc/shadow, and /etc/groups...

SP2 re-enables the XP firewall and security settings. Goto network connections in the control panel and disable the firewall. The 'gateway' I'm presuming you're talking about in network connections...
