x86 = 32-bit
x64 = 64-bit
But, that's just the capability of the OS (Operating System) that's installed. Your system itself may be able to run a 64-bit OS. Find your motherboard's make and model...

Are you using Windows 7?
Something else you can try is to click Start, type in msinfo32 and press [Enter]. In the right pane, to the right of "System type:" mine says "x64-based PC".

Press [Winkey][Pause], (or click Start, right-click Computer and select Properties), and to the right of "System type:" it'll tell you whether it's a 32-bit or 64-bit of Windows.

I have upgraded an Acer laptop from XP to Vista, then upgraded Vista to 7. PITA but it did work. "It" meaning Windows worked okay. Many of the little programs that worked on XP no longer worked on 7...
