any advantage in getting the higher speed dvd as opposed to say an 8 or 10x?

Thanks to all for your comments and suggestions, next concern is...does the speed of the drive itself have any advantage? I know with like a regular cd rom a 32x basically does the same as a 50x, so...

You could donate it to a local grade school...many are in serious need for basic equipment, PLUS you can get a fairly decent tax deduction :)
